Reading and it's importance
I can fully admit that I used to be a snotty hipster kid. I was one of those obnoxious things now pre V neck T shirts and skinny jeans (back when it was plaid flannel and in that odd time before the metal heads cut their hair short again) - digging my clothes out of the garbage, listening to obscure bands that no one gave a crap about, pursing the degree, turning my nose up at things, etc. But I grew up and got over that. Eventually after the college years were completed the first time around, I got out into the outside world of illiteracy and disappointments, and I stopped reading books. Recently someone said that I should start reading this book (title) that he had given me because he wanted me to identify with a certain character or story in it, and also because he said that he really related to this one character who is an immortal (and no it's not a vampire book, the individual in question has more of a sense of creativity than that). But, I confess, I haven't really picked them up. In that I have not exactly read the books in question because ... I find it rather boring now.
Reading is something that's important, no question about that. One must learn how to read in order to get by in all aspects of daily life. And yet, at some point we seem to loose our enthusiasm for it. There is nothing wrong, my post skinny hipster self says (as well as others) with popular fiction. Most people read popular fiction because we are following fads and trends. And yet, do I read this? Not really. Instead I find most of my reading is confined to newspaper articles online. I don't read the newspaper anymore because why pay for a newspaper when you can read it for free online anymore? I hardly think I am the only one on this.
Perhaps the best thing we can or cannot do is take a moment or two to ask ourselves what something means, because that's really what reading is all about. Read a story about a guy who (fill in the blank), then ask yourself what it means to either yourself or others. That's all we can hope for really, especially as I see my education career coming to fruition. I think I finally get it now. That's what it's all about. And with that, I'm going to watch some more TV. Ha ha ha ...
