I was supposed to start a new job this week. No, this is not a repeat of the nonsense of 2006 when I managed to go through three jobs in a year (the third one I was let go from because the whiner who I was working as a receptionist for said that he wasn't ready to get used to a new person and the woman who had quit and gone to another job he had asked to come back. Insidentally, I dropped into that office a few weeks ago to give that guy a piece of my mind and there were two new people working there. So much for resisting changes.) This one is, once again, for a health company whose primary focus is to enter data. It went through Congress a few years ago that all medical records have to be available on an Intranet system so all in clinical capacity have to be able to pull patient information up on a desktop, laptop, or tablet when seen. Now all practices and facilities are in a mad scramble to get all their paperwork put onto said system, either by manual keyboard entry or handwritten notes to be scanned in. This must be done by a certain time frame, but that certain time frame is not known by me at this moment (because I haven't Googled it to confirm).
A week or so ago, I got an email from the company about general information about being on the job. It included acceptable dress code as well as punctuality and professionalism. Of this I had no problems in following the rules, but there was some confusion as to when and where me and the rest of the data entry people were to start. At first it was said to be May 29th, then it was pushed back once again to June 3rd or perhaps June 10th. When Jun 3rd (last Monday) rolled around, I still had not heard on where and when we were to start. I woke up at 7 am, called the operations manager at 7:30, and left a voice mail message with just such a question. As I did not get a call back, I simply went back to bed and sat tight waiting until I went off to dreamland again. Yesterday I got an email from the operations manager saying that they are going to once again push back the start date to June 24th. This is, as he included in the email "the potential start date". So there are no garentees that it will, in fact, start on this date. *Sigh*
Many would get bent out of shape about something like this. The operations manager said in an email that if those have to make other employment arrangements they are welcome to and would understand. I was accused once of having a very cavalier attitude about my job which was why they had decided to terminate me. Quite honestly, I do have as such. I am not putting down this aboved name company in particular, nor the bigger system that they are to be serving as their client. Over time, I realized that there is a pecking order to things in companies and that the machine will eventually get the job done, just not as quickly as we would like it to. Sometimes things have to go through several hands before an answer is given, sometimes we have to wait for additional information to come back to us in order to solve a problem at hand, and sometimes we have to consult several sources before said problem is solved. In this world of instant gratification, however, it is hard to explain to others, even coworkers or bosses, that these things take time and energy that are otherwise out of one person's hands to make happen. And like every other job that looks so easy, most have no idea of the slave labor that goes on behind the scenes to try to solve even the smallest of inquiries or concerns. Over time, of course, you learn that there are a million and one things that have to be in a row or even considered when making even a small decission, and this is no exception. In short, "it gets done when it gets done." You know that you have done everything on your part to make things happen the right way, and when things get set back or put on hold for one reason or another, you know you have done your part and have to wait on others to back it up.
In this economy, we are as committed to bringing home the bacon as we ever were, but there are few if any sources out there that are willing to let us do so. There seems to be no such thing as ambition, earning potential, or otherwise choices to be made anymore. It can be depressing, but we keep on trying. So once again, waiting it out to see what problems will or won't be solved. Now I am living, once again, in suspended animation, but not complaining. It gets done when it gets done.
On a side note : I am wondering how it will be the office that I had mentioned in the first paragraph will cope with this. They had patient files that didn't even contain pages of paper but Post-It notes all in a mass jumble.
